Over the years, the technology for these spam artists has grown exponentially both in complexity and in difficulty to prevent. As such, an initiative had to be taken in an attempt to stave off the danger to users\u2019 data and devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While email providers have done their best to counteract malicious uses for their services, there are plenty that end up slipping through the cracks. As such, a new method for distinguishing phishing emails from authentic ones has been developed &#8211; Brand Indicators for Message Identification or BIMI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article explains the importance of <\/span><b>BIMI email<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and talks about why <\/span><b>Verified Mark Certificates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (VMC) are a necessary component of the protocol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/what-is-bimi-and-why-should-email-marketers-care-about-it\/\"><b>What is BIMI?<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BIMI stands for Brand Indicators for Message Identification. It\u2019s the leading attempt to prevent logo fraud in emails for phishing and scam use. The primary feature of BIMI is the ability to display your logo on your email in recipient inboxes. More and more email clients are adopting BIMI to encourage brands to verify their logo for official use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best part is that there\u2019s no fee to verify your logo for BIMI. It\u2019s a free process available to all parties. Currently, email clients such as Yahoo!, AOL, and Gmail all support this new feature, with many other email providers planning to do the same soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, email marketers, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">managed service providers (MSPs), and managed security service providers (MSSPs)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must adapt to the growing advancement of BIMI. Before long, it\u2019s likely that most email clients will join the BIMI initiative in an attempt to reduce the relentless cases of spam and spoofing emails out there.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is VMC?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to Twitter\u2019s \u201cverified user\u201d blue checkmarks, a VMC is an official mark that the domain has the official claim to its brand logo. While Google is currently the only one to enforce Verified Mark Certificates, other email providers are following suit to prevent misuse of a brand logo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This way, an email recipient can see whether or not you are the authentic owner of the displayed brand before they even open the email. This helps reduce the amount of spam and phishing emails that utilize brand names to appear genuine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A VMC logo has an added layer of security. Since it\u2019s verified by the official trademark organization, it\u2019s much more difficult to spoof or use for unintended purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What BIMI and VMC Certification Means for Businesses<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BIMI email sounds like an obvious idea in theory, but what about in practice? More importantly, what does it mean for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> business in particular?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, BIMI and VMC create some complications, as well as some opportunities. As verification becomes mainstream, more and more businesses will be expected to adopt such measures. If BIMI and VMC become widely used, people could start ignoring any and all emails from businesses that don\u2019t present their logo on the side. However, if that\u2019s the case, then the solution is an easy one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going through logo verification is simple if you have proper <a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/what-is-email-encryption-how-to-encrypt-email-and-how-does-it-work\/\">email security protocols<\/a> (SPF, DKIM, and DMARC) set up. So, while the BIMI initiative can be intimidating to businesses that don\u2019t have those, it really is a simple fix once your email infrastructure has the <a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/how-to-implement-dmarc-with-easydmarc\/\">DMARC reject policy implemented<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BIMI&#8217;s benefits here are vast. For starters, any recipients of your emails will know that it\u2019s a trusted and official email from your company. Your logo won\u2019t just be tied to random spam and malware-infested emails that are crawling around the internet. Having a clean, untarnished name for your business is an absolute must.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondly, this BIMI initiative is excellent for brand recognition. Many email clients are finally allowing logos to be displayed next to the sender. Overall, this will allow for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.superside.com\/branding-services\/logo-design\">eye-catching logos<\/a> to be associated with your company in someone\u2019s mind every time they see your emails in their inbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to Obtain a VMC Certificate<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process for acquiring a VMC certificate isn\u2019t quite as complicated as you might expect. However, it\u2019s no \u201ctwo clicks and you\u2019re done\u201d either. But don\u2019t worry, we\u2019re here to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, you\u2019ll find the verified mark certificates acquisition process:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 1<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reach <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/what-is-a-dmarc-policy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DMARC Compliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 2<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to make sure that your logo is registered and recognized as an official trademark. VMC certificates will not be granted to any brand logos that aren\u2019t registered by an official intellectual property office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This step may not always be a requirement in the future, as the BIMI standard is set to change in the future and extend to non-trademarked logos. However, for now, this is the first requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 3<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you\u2019ll need to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/tools\/bimi-logo-converter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">convert your logo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a Scalable Vector Graphics (or .SVG) format. Note that if your logo has complex art in it, it may have to be altered to display properly. You can contact either DigiCert or Entrust certificate authority in order to request your VMC. <a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/easy-dmarc-email-protection-tools\/\">EasyDMARC<\/a> has partnered with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.digicert.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DigiCert<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to give our customers a seamless journey through DMARC compliance and BIMI\/VMC implementation. Once you\u2019ve been approved, you should receive the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Privacy Enhanced Mail<a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.digicert.com\/solution\/vmc-pem-file-and-svg-where-does-everything-go\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/knowledge.digicert.com\/solution\/vmc-pem-file-and-svg-where-does-everything-go<\/a> (PEM) file<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 5<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upload the PEM file to your public webserver. Don\u2019t lose the URL of the PEM file.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 6<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, log in to your domain provider and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/tools\/bimi-record-generator\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">add a BIMI TXT record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using that URL from your PEM file.
