There are no safe spaces in the digital world without adequate cybersecurity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, cyberattacks and email security breaches only grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay abreast of the most important email and cybersecurity with our recap for the first week of May.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Hundreds of Global Companies Targeted By Spying Campaign<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Operation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CuckooBees, an apparent spying effort by Chinese state-sponsored hackers, was recently discovered by the cybersecurity firm Cybereason.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The campaign is supposedly linked to the prolific <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cybereason.com\/blog\/operation-cuckoobees-a-winnti-malware-arsenal-deep-dive\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winnti Group, or APT 41.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cybereason informed the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department of the discovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hackers made away with data from dozens of large energy, defense, pharmaceutical, and aerospace companies located in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe, Asia, and North America. The targeted enterprises were none the wiser during the data breaches and cyberattacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the attacks were global, the US was the top target for the stolen data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout a 12-month investigation, Cybereason found the intruders took a store of sensitive proprietary data and intellectual property like;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blueprints<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source code<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R&amp;D documents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formulae<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fighter jet diagrams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helicopter diagrams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Missile diagrams<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attackers didn&#8217;t stop there. They also acquired details about various companies\u2019\u00a0 network architecture, user accounts, user credentials, business units, customer data, employee emails, etc. All this data can be used for future <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/what-is-quid-pro-quo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyberattacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>U.S. Department of Defense Lost $23M in a Phishing Scam<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cybercriminal pleaded guilty to six counts related to the theft of over $23 million on 28 April 2022. His sentence has yet to be determined but the conspiracy and bank fraud convictions alone each carry a maximum of 30 years behind bars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sercan Oyuntur of California targeted a U.S. Department of Defense contractor. Oyuntur&#8217;s fellow criminal schemers were in Turkey, Germany, and New Jersey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They targeted the individual responsible for communicating with the DoD through a government computer system. The cybercriminals attempted to steal money meant for a company supplying jet fuel to U.S. troops in Southeast Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conspirators made fake email accounts and designed fraudulent web pages similar to the General Services Administration (GSA) website.
