This is where the <\/span><b>DNS MX record <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comes in. This article will explore an <\/span><b>MX DNS record<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and how you can check it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is a DNS MX Record, and What\u2019s its purpose?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>What is an MX record in DNS?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/top-8-most-common-types-of-dns-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">types of DNS records<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that route emails to nameservers using the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). It\u2019s otherwise called a Mail Exchange record. In the above MX record, the nameservers first try the domain name with the lowest priority number, being 10.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if it fails, the server resolves back to the second domain. You can configure both MX records with the same priority number, so they receive the same number of emails.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to Query an MX Record?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Querying your MX record is known as MX <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/tools\/dns-record-checker\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DNS record lookup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the process is straightforward. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/datatracker.ietf.org\/doc\/html\/rfc2181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RFC 2181<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pointing an MX record to a CNAME record is forbidden.
