Another top story-making waves is that of a cyber group selling data of one billion Chinese citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beginning of the month was quite tense in the cyberworld, so dig in and find out the top news in our recap.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/hacker-claims-have-stolen-1-bln-records-chinese-citizens-police-2022-07-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>One Billion Chinese Citizens\u2019 Data for Sale Online<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The week has started with an exclusive cybersecurity news story, which first emerged on the first and second of July.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hacker&#8217;s post reportedly selling the personal data of one billion Chinese citizens on an online hacker forum began circulating on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the hacker, the information came from the Shanghai National Police database, containing data of one billion Chinese national residents and several billion case records including:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Names<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile numbers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addresses<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birthplaces<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National ID numbers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case details<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The threat actor is identified as ChinaDan, who offered to sell over 23 terabytes (TB) of stolen data for nearly $195,000 (or 10 Bitcoin).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CEO of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cz_binance\/status\/1543700689611792386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the company&#8217;s threat intelligence team found the records for sale on the dark web.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cybercriminal provided a sample to peruse, containing 750,000 records for potential buyers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It remains unclear how the cybercriminal could obtain the data. The hacker claims to have stolen it from a private cloud network belonging to Alibaba\u2019s cloud computing subsidiary, Aliyun, which hosts the Shanghai National Police database.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Binance\u2019s Zhao said that a government developer accidentally caused the breach, stating in his tweet, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cApparently, this exploit happened because the gov developer wrote a tech blog on CSDN and accidentally included the credentials.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several news platforms have contacted the Chinese government and the Shanghai Police for comments, but the authorities have so far remained silent about the incident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some cybersecurity experts remain suspicious of the magnitude and veracity of the hacker\u2019s claims, the alleged data breach is still a significant concern. If it turns out to be accurate, this could be one of the largest data breaches in history. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/databreaches.net\/2022\/07\/05\/exclusive-marriott-hacked-again-yes-heres-what-we-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>20 GB of Data Stolen from Marriott Multinational Hotel Chain<\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multinational hotel chain Marriott International has suffered its third major data breach since 2018, causing 20 GB of data loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On July 5th, the cybersecurity news headline broke on a website that tracks data breaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purported origin of the stolen data is the BWI Airport Marriott server in Maryland, USA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DataBreaches.net received a message from an unrecognized sender, claiming they had stolen data from Marriott hotels. The hackers remain unidentified, although they stated they sent emails to Marriott employees about the breach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cybercriminals say the hotel&#8217;s representatives initially communicated with them but stopped responding suddenly\u2014supposedly when the subject of payment for the return of the stolen data came up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marriott representatives confirmed the breach, but they seemingly downplayed its severity, describing the stolen data as \u201cnon-sensitive internal business files.\u201d The hackers disagree, citing \u201ccritical data\u201d such as personally identifiable information of guests and employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The method of the breach was a social engineering scam. The hackers tricked a Marriott hotel associate into giving them access. A sample of the data was even shared with Databreaches.net. It included flight reservation details, info on assigned staff rooms, corporate credit card details, and airline employees\u2019 names.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marriott didn\u2019t provide any further details about the data breach except that they\u2019ve notified law enforcement, 300-400 individuals, and the appropriate data regulators.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Final Thoughts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another week, and more proof that your cyberspace is never safe without proper security techniques.
