By <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generating an SPF record<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019re giving recipients a way to reject any unauthorized emails using your domain name.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process starts at the receiving server\u2019s end, where the return-path address is cross-checked. It verifies whether the sender\u2019s email address is registered in the SPF record. The \u2018From\u2019 header is displayed mostly as the sender\u2019s email address. So, instead, it uses the \u2018Envelope From\u2019 to check the DNS record.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SPF doesn\u2019t work with forwarded emails as the \u2018forwarder\u2019 becomes the new \u2018sender.\u2019 So, there\u2019s no technique to determine <\/span><b>what an SPF record does for<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forwarded emails. This lets malicious actors scam people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SPF doesn\u2019t have a reporting mechanism, which makes it harder to maintain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While SPF is a helpful email security protocol, more is needed to secure your domain entirely. It\u2019s typically used as the last mechanism, defining how recipient servers should handle emails from sender IPs that failed to match any previous mechanisms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If the domain name consists of an A or AAAA address record, it\u2019ll be matched. This is because it can be resolved to the sender&#8217;s address.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IP4: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The match is successful if the sender belongs to the given IPv4 address range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IP6: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The match is successful if the sender belongs to the given IPv6 address range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>MX:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The sender\u2019s email address will be validated if the domain name has an MX record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>PTR:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The match will be successful if the PTR record belongs to a given domain that resolves to the client\u2019s address. Its use isn\u2019t encouraged as sometimes it can block all emails from your domain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EXISTS:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Instructs and A query to be performed. If the given domain name resolves to any address, it matches. This SPF mechanism works irrespective of the fixed address.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>INCLUDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Used to list other third-party domains authorized to send emails on your behalf.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Modifiers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modifiers play an essential role in determining <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how an SPF record works<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These are name or value pairs separated by the<\/span><b> \u2018=\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> symbol that share additional details. You can see them multiple times at the end of the SPF record. No attention is paid to any unrecognized modifiers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> \u2018redirect\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> modifier points to other SPF records. It\u2019s deployed when you own multiple domains and wish to apply the same SPF content across them. This modifier has to be used if a single entity controls all the domains, otherwise the <\/span><b>\u2018include\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modifier is used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the <\/span><b>\u2018-\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fail) modifier appears on a matched mechanism, the <\/span><b>\u2018exp\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> modifier is used to provide reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Qualifiers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each mechanism can be combined with one of four qualifiers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u2018+\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0for a <\/span><b>PASS<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> result<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>\u2018?\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0for a <\/span><b>NEUTRAL<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> result interpreted like NONE policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>\u2018~\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for <\/span><b>SOFTFAIL<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
