High-profile cyberattacks continue to make headlines, reinforcing the need for robust online security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus far, November has seen some major cybersecurity news stories, highlighted below in this week\u2019s recap.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/news\/press-releases\/2022\/10\/ftc-brings-action-against-ed-tech-provider-chegg-careless-security-exposed-personal-data-millions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>The Federal Trade Commission Announces 40 Million Personal Records Leaked by Chegg Inc<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced it had taken action to ensure Chegg Inc. fixes its data security issues, which have led to four serious <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/11-ways-to-prevent-data-loss-and-data-breaches-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data breaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chegg, Inc. is an American multi-billion dollar online education technology giant that employs about 2,500 people and provides services like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homework help<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online tutoring<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital and physical textbook rentals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Textbooks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other student services\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FTC said that Chegg&#8217;s &#8220;flexible data security practices&#8221; exposed the private data of millions of customers and employees, such as email addresses, passwords, and dates of birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Personal Records Revealed Since 2017<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 31, FTC released a press statement indicating that the ed tech company\u2019s\u00a0 repeated negligent approach to data security stems from 2017 and has exposed:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email addresses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Security numbers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passwords<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Names and surnames<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, a former Chegg Inc. contractor stored the personal data of approximately 40 million customers by accessing the company&#8217;s cloud database on an Amazon Web Services server.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contractor, who owned the administrator login details, had stolen the information, resulting in employees&#8217; and customers&#8217; data being sold on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dark web<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Federal Trade Commission states that Chegg Inc. continuously failed to resolve issues with its data security while collecting specific user information such as:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heritage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Religious background<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual orientation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dates of birth<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following FTC&#8217;s complaint order voted 4-0 by the Commission, Chegg Inc. has agreed to upgrade its cybersecurity practices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Updating security measures includes documenting and following a schedule regarding which personal data is collected, why, and when it will be deleted. The Commission also requires Chegg Inc. to provide its customers access to data about them and allow them to request the deletion of that data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chegg Inc. also must provide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/what-is-multifactor-authentication-and-why-do-you-need-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multifactor authentication<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methods to its customers and employees to secure their accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, the company has to implement a cybersecurity program that encrypts customer data and provides employee training.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Cyberattack Hits ALMA Observatory Causing Operations to Shut Down<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 29th, a vast cyberattack caused the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) Observatory to suspend all astronomical observation operations and shutdown its public website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observatory&#8217;s email services are currently limited, and IT specialists are working on restoring the systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALMA, located in Chile, announced the security incident on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/almaobs\/status\/1587777940565155840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to the nature of the incident, there&#8217;s no estimated date when operations will be restored.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s worth noting that according to the observatory, no scientific data was compromised in the attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALMA Observatory&#8217;s spokesperson indicated that they can&#8217;t discuss the details of an ongoing investigation, that their IT team is ready to face the situation, and that they&#8217;re working on recovering normal operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ALMA observatory has 66 high-precision radio telescopes 12 meters in diameter and 5,000 meters high, at the Chajnantor plateau.
