Sparking a new wave of concern, the remote access trojan (RAT) malware infects browsers via a malicious extension disguised as a legitimate one. It can do everything from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/top-9-different-types-of-password-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">password attacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and cookie stealing to turning victims\u2019 devices into crypto miners and bots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it&#8217;s not the only cybercrime concern. Cybersecurity researchers warn of &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehackernews.com\/2022\/11\/warning-this-widespread-malicious.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">massive phishing campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; with five different malware targeting Indian bank users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November\u2019s second recap of email <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/what-is-a-data-breach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">security breach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stories and cybersecurity news, we look at the U.S. DoJ&#8217;s second-largest-ever crypto seizure and new information-stealing malware targeting users of two popular email clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>New StrelaStealer Malware Steals Outlook and Thunderbird Credentials<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two widely used email clients, Outlook and Thunderbird, have recently been targeted by a new information-stealing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/what-is-malware-and-how-can-you-prevent-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malware<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> named &#8216;StrelaStealer&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The malicious software is actively stealing email credentials, but the style differs from most info-stealers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, cybercriminals try to steal data from various data sources, like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cryptocurrency wallet apps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Browsers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cloud gaming apps\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clipboard data<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The analysts at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@DCSO_CyTec\/shortandmalicious-strelastealer-aims-for-mail-credentials-a4c3e78c8abc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DCSO CyTec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discovered the new malware first targeting Spanish-speaking users in early November this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">StrelaStealer appears on the victim&#8217;s system via email attachments, currently ISO files with varying content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purpose-built malware spreads via Polyglots, files valid in two or more formats. It renders lure documents and, once executed, steals mail login data from Outlook and Thunderbird.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cybersecurity firm\u2019s investigation is ongoing, so whether the malware forms part of a targeted attack remains unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/vpnoverview.com\/news\/doj-seizes-3-36-billion-stolen-from-dark-web-marketplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>DoJ Discovers $3.36 Billion Loot, Hidden for a Decade<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 7th, the U.S. Department of Justice announced its second-largest crypto seizure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over a decade ago, in 2012, James Zhong stole 50,676 BTC from the illegal dark web marketplace Silk Road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, due to Zhong&#8217;s property search, the police found Bitcoin worth over $3.36 billion and other assets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday, November 7th, 2022, Zhong was found guilty of wire fraud. The criminal will be sentenced in February 2023 and could face up to 20 years in jail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the raid in Gainesville last year, Internal Revenue Service agents found the loot of 50,491 BTC hidden in an underground safe, on a single-board computer and even a popcorn can covered in blankets in the bathroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On James Zhong&#8217;s property, there was also:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 11 additional BTC<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$661,000 in cash<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rare Casascius coins, which are physical iterations of Bitcoin (valued at 174 BTC)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some metal bars (possibly silver and gold)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/pr\/us-attorney-announces-historic-336-billion-cryptocurrency-seizure-and-conviction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Department of Justice stated that Zhong has been collaborating with law enforcement since March 2022 and has relinquished 1,004 BTC thus far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DoJ said that Zhong invested the stolen funds in businesses and real estate, created a company, and displayed his lavish lifestyle on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For ten years, the disappearance of 50,000 BTC puzzled law enforcement, but cutting-edge cryptocurrency tracing and investigations by IRS agents finally paid off.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Final Thoughts<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s all for this week&#8217;s email security news and cybersecurity news recap.
