{"id":36267,"date":"2023-06-16T10:15:39","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T10:15:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/?p=36267"},"modified":"2026-06-01T15:16:48","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T15:16:48","slug":"protonmail-spf-dkim-configuration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/protonmail-spf-dkim-configuration\/","title":{"rendered":"ProtonMail SPF and DKIM Configuration: Step by Step"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This instructional article will demonstrate the <em>ProtonMail <\/em>configuration process of Sender Policy Framework (SPF), DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) Signatures to ensure <em>ProtonMail <\/em>passes the DMARC alignment check and eliminate spam from your domain and increase security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SPF record identifies the mail servers and domains that are allowed to send email on behalf of your domain. The DKIM record, on the other hand, is a specially formatted DNS TXT record that stores the public key the receiving mail server will use to verify a message&#8217;s signature. These email authentication methods will be used to prove to ISPs and mail services that senders are truly authorized to send email from a particular domain and, are a way of verifying your email sending server is sending emails through your domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" id=\"spf-yes\">\n<h2 id=\"h-the-process-of-setting-up-the-spf-record\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The process of setting up the SPF Record<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure the emails from <em>ProtonMail <\/em>are sent on behalf of your domain, you need to create or update your existing SPF record by including the following mechanism: <em>include:_spf.protonmail.ch<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can easily do this by using our <a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/tools\/spf-record-generator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SPF Generator Tool<\/a> and following the steps below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Navigate to <a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/tools\/spf-record-generator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SPF Record Generator<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add include:<em>_spf.protonmail.ch<\/em> in the include:__ section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose the Policy (The options are: Fail (Not Compliant will be rejected), SoftFail (Not Compliant will be accepted but marked) and Neutral (Mails will be probably accepted)).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you have made followed the steps, click on the \u201cGenerate\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> 5. Copy the provided <em>ProtonMail <\/em>SPF record and navigate to your DNS provider (CloudFlare, Godaddy, etc.) and create a TXT Record. <strong>We\u2019ll be using CloudFlare for this example.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"925\" height=\"461\" src=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1-4.png 925w, https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1-4-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1-4-768x383.png 768w, https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1-4-450x224.png 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 925px) 100vw, 925px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">6. Click on \u201cSave\u201d <br \/>7. Wait up to 72 hours to allow your DNS to process the changes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important Note: Each domain must have only one SPF TXT Record. If you have multiple SPF Records, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/spf-too-many-dns-lookups-error\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>SPF will return a PermError<\/strong><\/a><strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are using multiple IPs, ESPs, Third-Party services for your various email strategies, you should include them in a single SPF Record.<br \/>E.g <em>v=spf1 ip4:18.57.156.221 include:_spf.protonmail.ch include:thirdpartyservice.com ~all<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" id=\"dkim-yes\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The process of setting up the DKIM Record<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, you need to create DKIM records by following the steps below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Login to your ProtonMail email account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the domain you want to add a DKIM, head to <strong>ProtonMailSettings \u2192 Go to settings\u2192 Organization \u2192 Domain names \u2192 Actions column \u2192 Review<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"402\" src=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2.png.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2.png.webp 1024w, https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2.png-300x118.webp 300w, https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2.png-768x302.webp 768w, https:\/\/easydmarc.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2.png-450x177.webp 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3.
