This instructional article will demonstrate the ProtonMail <\/em>configuration process of Sender Policy Framework (SPF), DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) Signatures to ensure ProtonMail <\/em>passes the DMARC alignment check and eliminate spam from your domain and increase security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SPF record identifies the mail servers and domains that are allowed to send email on behalf of your domain. The DKIM record, on the other hand, is a specially formatted DNS TXT record that stores the public key the receiving mail server will use to verify a message’s signature. These email authentication methods will be used to prove to ISPs and mail services that senders are truly authorized to send email from a particular domain and, are a way of verifying your email sending server is sending emails through your domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process of setting up the SPF Record<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

To ensure the emails from ProtonMail <\/em>are sent on behalf of your domain, you need to create or update your existing SPF record by including the following mechanism: include:_spf.protonmail.ch<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can easily do this by using our SPF Generator Tool<\/a> and following the steps below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Navigate to SPF Record Generator<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Add include:_spf.protonmail.ch<\/em> in the include:__ section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Choose the Policy (The options are: Fail (Not Compliant will be rejected), SoftFail (Not Compliant will be accepted but marked) and Neutral (Mails will be probably accepted)).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. When you have made followed the steps, click on the \u201cGenerate\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    1. Copy the provided ProtonMail <\/em>SPF record and navigate to your DNS provider (CloudFlare, Godaddy, etc.) and create a TXT Record. We\u2019ll be using CloudFlare for this example.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      6. Click on \u201cSave\u201d 7. Wait up to 72 hours to allow your DNS to process the changes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Important Note: Each domain must have only one SPF TXT Record. If you have multiple SPF Records, <\/strong>SPF will return a PermError<\/strong><\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If you are using multiple IPs, ESPs, Third-Party services for your various email strategies, you should include them in a single SPF Record.
      E.g v=spf1 ip4:18.57.156.221 include:_spf.protonmail.ch include:thirdpartyservice.com ~all<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The process of setting up the DKIM Record<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      Now, you need to create DKIM records by following the steps below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Login to your ProtonMail email account<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. For the domain you want to add a DKIM, head to ProtonMailSettings \u2192 Go to settings\u2192 Organization \u2192 Domain names \u2192 Actions column \u2192 Review<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        1. Select the DKIM tab<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          1. Add three host names and values to your domain\u2019s DNS settings as mentioned<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            Important Note: Once ProtonMail detects these records in your DNS, the SPF and DKIM tabs will show a green tick icon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Congratulations, you now successfully authenticated your outgoing mail stream from ProtonMail <\/em>with SPF and DKIM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Important note: <\/strong>If the provider recommends publishing also a DMARC record, there\u2019s no need to do so if you already have a DMARC record in place, as each domain can only have one DMARC record.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
